The Moscow Art Theatre named after A. P. Chekhov
Details:
The Comédie-Française, founded in 1680 by the decree of Louis XIV , will bring to Moscow its famous performance The Marriage of Figaro based on the play of Pierre Beaumarchais staged by Christophe Rauck, young well-known French director. This is the most performed play of classical repertoire; it was the Comédie-Française stage where The Marriage of Figaro was first professionally performed in 1784.
The new version of the play by Christophe Rauck proves that he is a mature master. The interpretation of the play as anticipation of Great French Revolution is not interesting for him: he is keen on the story of the most cheerful of all intrigues as Beaumarchais described it. Rauck reunited theatre and festival, mind and frivolous fun. Stage set consists only of boards and banners showing doors, beds, fragments of pictures, and in the last act wooden hobbyhorses and stuffed deers. On this half-empty stage the text sounds with new force as if getting free from all memories connected with it, and, as a result, it appears to be surprisingly modern. To shake off century dust from masterpieces, without breaking them into pieces is the main task of modern classical theatre in the opinion of the French media.
