Racing
Nowadays at weekend the Moscow Hippodrome regularly tests fivebreeds of horses. Trotter testing is performed throughout the year — around 1 000 horses annually. They are Russian, Orlov and American trotters raised at Russian and Ukrainian stud-farms. The Central Moscow Hippodrome gives the most notable and valuable prizes for trotters in the country. The important of them are the Big All-Russian Prize (Derby), the All-Russian Bars prize, the Elita and Pion prizes, the Big Open prize for mares, the Central Moscow Hippodrome prize and others. The Hippodrome is also the venue for the races sponsored by the Frenchtrotter association (Days of France), European and Russian jockey championships, winter and summer troika competitions.
Every year from May to September the track of the Moscow Hippodrome tests racehorses of the Thoroughbred and Arabian breeds raised at various Russian stud-farms and purchased abroad. For two years running in the middle of the summer season the Russian Argamak race for the Akhal-Teke breed took place there. This is also the place for the biggest and most valuable prizes for the Thoroughbred — the Big All-Russian Prize (Derby), the Anilin prize, the Nasibov Cup, the Jockey Club prize, the prize of the RF Minister of Agriculture and others. Frequently, though not annually, the Moscow Hippodrome hosts the races for the RF President prize for Thoroughbreds featuring horses from various countries.
Alongside its main function as the agility and endurance testing site for horses of various breeds the Moscow Hippodrome is used for other equestrian events: show-jumping, dressage tests, horse polo competitions, ring dressage of pedigreed horses.
For the public’s entertainment between the horse competitions the Hippodrome organizes dog and camel races, sled dog races, pony competitions, performances featuring horses and ponies, as well as fancy riding.
History
In Russia the founder of equestrian testing and races was Count Orlov-Chesmensky. The first Moscow races were organized at Donskoe Pole at the end of the XVIII century. Unlike the trotting races of the period the Horse Racing Rules were elaborated in detail defining jockeys’ weight and colour. When the Horse Hunt Society was established in 1831 in Moscow races became a matter of honour. But Russian horses were ridden almost exclusively by English jockeys Wood, Hudson, Day Eve Taylor, Avison and others. In 1835 at the Khodynka Field near the trotting hippodrome a new racing hippodrome was built.
In 1886 following the example of England, the homeland for the Thoroughbred horses, Moscow introduced the most honorary All-Russian Derby prize for three year old horses of this breed. Horse testing at the Moscow hippodromes was very prestigious. Besides flat and trotting races, steeplechases and concourshippiques, that required a special diagonal track, were gaining popularity.
In Soviet Russia regular horse testing starts in 1920s. The first trial races at the Moscow Hippodrome of 1921 enabled the GU KON equestrian authority to establish regular testing in the autumn of 1921. In September of 1921 trotting races resume in Moscow. “The Moscow Hippodrome, idle for several years, came back to life, resumed regular testing and is once again the beacon for thecountry’s horse breeding community,” the media informed. Prior to1930 trotting and racing hippodromes were separate, though in close proximity. The expansion of the Belarusian-Baltic railway raised the issue of rebuilding or relocation of the racing facility. The merger of the two hippodromes was completed in 1930. The racing hippodrome with three concentric tracks remained at its original site.
In the summer of 1950 the stands of the Moscow Hippodrome were destroyed by fire. The present building designed by architect I. V. Zholtovsky was constructed in 1950–1955,the prize track was coated with synthetic material in the 1970s.
“…racing is not, as many believe, merely the hunter’s pleasure and passion for betting, it is rather the only means to preserve and improve superior horse breeds and their main faculties — agility and strength… racing is the justification for the horse’s abilities and mechanics, strength of bones and nerves, resilience of sinews etc…”
