Rinks
For the fans of figure skating and winter entertainment around 800 outdoor ice rinks were set up in Moscow — in amusement parks, stadiums and yards. Modern ice rinks in all of the city districts are popular with Muscovites and guests of the capital.
Every year the Russian capital invites visitors to the Red Square skating rink that is open both at temperatures sub-zero and slightly above. This year’s main theme is the Vancouver Winter Olympics.
Ice rinks are built in many parks and recreation areas. Most of them feature changing rooms, and skates rent and sharpening services, although the ice quality may be to a certain extent inferior to specialized sporting facilities. One of the oldest and biggest rinks is in the Gorky amusement park (Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure). With the overall area of 40 000 square metres one can skate on its tracks and courts, and on the frozen pond. There are also rinks in the Sokolniki and Kolomenskoe parks, the VVC exhibition centre, the Patriarshiye Ponds, the Hermitage garden and the world premiere “Glamour ice” rink in the AptekarskyOgorod botanical garden and some other. In the evenings the rinks in parks are illuminated in various colours and the cafes offer their visitors hot tea, mulled wine, pancakes and sandwiches.
Better ice and many additional services are supplied at the specialized rinks — eight rinks of the Russkaya Zima chain, five sites of the Novaya Liga and others. In addition the rinks in Tsaritsino, Petrovka andin the KrylyaSovetov sports palace of the Russkaya Zima chain have the winter figure skating school of the pair skating world champions MariyaPetrova and Alexey Tikhonov; the Novaya Liga rinks boast the school of the women’s single skating world champion Mariya Butyrskaya.

The work of most rinks depends on the weather: they open when the night temperature sets at below -8–10°C, and the day temperature — at below -5°C; there are, however, outdoor rinks equipped to operate at temperatures up to +5–10°C. All the specialized rinks in Moscow provide skates renting and sharpening services, warm changing rooms, bars and restaurants, parking (where available) and background music combined with festive illumination. The rinks are for the most part fee-paying, the changing rooms may be fee-paying, too.

The Moscow rinks organize sporting events for the whole family that include an entertainment programme, sports competitions, contests, prizes and gifts; it is easy to organize a children’s holiday or a corporate party. There are also special rinks: for instance, near the Grebnoycanal and the KrylatskyHills there is the Cinema rink where visitors may skate while watching films and music videos on a 220 m2 screen. Thanks to the cooling equipment the rink at the Triumphal Arch will work even at +15°C, besides the rent service and warm changing rooms the visitors may enjoy the snow spring-board.
