January 25, 1755, on St. Tatiana’s Day according to the Russian Orthodox Church calendar the decree on the opening of the Moscow University, the largest, oldest and the most prestigious college in the country, was signed. In 1791 the university house church was consecrated by the name of St. Tatiana. The original temple was located in the right wing of the old building, but in 1812 it was destroyed by fire. In 1837 the new place for the church was consecrated — a rebuilt “theater” wing of the building newly bought nearby, where the church is located today. In the second half of XIX century Tatiana’s Day was the unofficial student holiday, a widely celebrated by the scholars’ fraternity of Moscow. In 2005, the President of Russia Vladimir Putin signed a decree which announced Jan. 25 the Students’ Day in Russia. And though Moscow University is the centre of the festivities, students across the country celebrate Tatiana’s Day — the day of their patron saint.
