Food catering

Moscow of nowadays offers its dwellers and tourists a wide range of gastronomic outlets of all kind – from small eateries and fast-food chains to luxury restaurants. Those foreigners who still remember the Moscow of the Soviet time in Russian history will appreciate the now available variety of food catering services and establishments. Some 20-30 years ago there were just a few fashionable restaurants in the Russian capital that were not at all frequented by ordinary city dwellers and among most commonly sighted signs were Stolovaya (eating house), Cheburechnaya (meat pastry house), Pelmennaya (dumpling house) and Riyumochnaya (hot beverages serving bar). Some of these establishments have kept their ‘old-time’ signs but today these are rather sort of homage to fashion and style than actual reference to the class of the establishment in point.

In the 1990’s the capital was infested with cooperative tea and coffee houses and small restaurants with all kinds of exotic names that were spawning and disappearing, changing locations, expanding their presence and clientele and going bankrupt at the speed of a lightning. Today these have been superseded by European and world level food catering establishments featuring some national specificities or a strong tint of foreignness about them that offer their customers food catering services with a great deal of diligence, smartness and savvy.

Food catering

Moscow has always been renowned for its food festivities and this tradition is kept alive nowadays. A lot of famous restaurants with pre-revolution history have again opened their doors to the general public. Numerous fast-food chains – both foreign and domestic – have been deployed. These days’ traditional Moscow food catering establishments sit side by side with pubs, trattorias and pizzerias. Queues and overcrowding remained in the past – when in Moscow, you can have breakfast, lunch and dinner with all the comfort and in a nice environment. And as an addition, it is worth mentioning that most of food catering outlets in Moscow offer good quality meals at moderate prices, many of them working 24 hours at that.

The capital offers you dishes representing all cuisines of the world, be it Russian, Italian, French, Georgian, Chinese, Mexican, Armenian, Japanese or the exotic Tibetan and Mongolian cuisine. It is worth noting that Moscow restaurants and cafés are characterized by ‘a mixture of styles’ coming from the diversity of food preferences and tastes of Moscovites. The capital has become home to representatives of dozens of different nationalities who are not at all ready to say ‘no’ to their habitual food preferences. Besides, the flow of foreign tourists coming to Moscow is increasing from year to year. That is why, to satisfy all the various expectations many food catering establishments offer on their menus dishes pertaining to different food preparation cultures. Thus in a restaurant specializing in the Mediterranean cuisine you can be prompted to look into a complementary French or Mexican food menu; and likewise an Italian pizzeria can sometimes be kitted out with a sushi-bar while a Chinese eatery may also serve Russian, Georgian or Mediterranean food specialties. The capital can boast specialized cafés and restaurants for children, children’s menu exist in a lot of ‘adult’ food catering establishments, too.

Moscow is always keen to satisfy most refined tastes of its guests. Irrespective of which restaurant you choose you can always expect to get traditional Russian hospitality and good quality.
