Fast-food chains
Food network restaurants and fast-food cafés have emerged in response to accelerating life tempo of large megacities. With global presence, these chains are quite successful in accomplishing their primary task, which is to feed city dwellers in a prompt manner and at a good quality level. Keeping pace with time in its development, Moscow is not an exclusion to this global trend – fast-food restaurants have been settled in the capital for a long time and they now serve several thousand visitors a day. It is worth noting an interesting historical fact, which is that once Russia was sort of a ‘policy-maker’ in the world of fast food. Today’s world renowned French bistros owe their very existence to Russian hussars. In 1814 after marching into Paris flamboyant hussars were so much in a hurry to see and taste everything in the French capital that they kept shouting at slow garçons: “Bistro, bistro! (Hurry up!)”. The word was remembered, dishes were served with more haste and since then eateries with a Russian name and French character have been spreading and prospering. If your time in the Russian capital is limited and you cannot afford to sit quietly in a café with your friends or if you have a tough schedule filled with excursions, why not take advantage of a fast-food restaurant. Perhaps you would not be ready to eagerly taste unknown food. In this case you may start with a world-known brand of a restaurant that is present in your country, too. There is no problem in finding one in Moscow. Service and types of dishes in a Moscow restaurant will not be in the least different from what you are used to at home. Perhaps after this first try you will be bolder to taste ‘Russian fast-food’ to see what makes it different. Menus in Russian fast-food taverns whose interior, as a rule, is made in the countryside style comprise dishes of Russian and European cuisine. In some eateries all dishes are arranged on a stylized cart which serve as sort of buffet meal of various traditional Russian hot and cold hors d'oeuvres – from salty herring with onion to famous pickles and hot garnishes. Here you will be offered meat, fish, stchi (cabbage soup), pasties, various pancakes as well as tea, coffee, fruit juices, cheese cakes with sour cream, cottage cheese pies and many other delicious things. Moscow also hosts Ukrainian food network restaurants with borsch (beetroot soup), galushkies and varennikies (Ukrainian dumplings with various staffing), frozen spicy fat and gorilka (Ukrainian vodka). In various networks of American-type restaurants and eateries you can order the famous Big Mac, hamburgers, cheeseburgers or French fries or taste dishes from the seasoned menu. Here you can have enormous portions of fried potatoes, bread-crumbed and crispy mushrooms, house drinks, quesadilla, tortilla with veal of chicken stuffing, tender glazed pork ribs, salads, sandwiches and juicy stakes. Italian food network restaurants and pizzerias, apart from a traditional pizza (thick or thin) with various toppings - sausages, ham, sea food, vegetables, – could also offer a closed-type pizza stuffed with meat and pepperoni that could come with different types of pasta, chicken, fish, vegetable and fruit salads. On the menu you can also find Italian cutlets, meat and vegetarian lasagna, meat balls, cheese tortellini with chicken mushrooms and cream sauce, calzone and stromboli. Japanese food network restaurants offer their visitors traditional Japanese dishes also adopted by fast-food. These include sushi and sashimi, rolls, assorted sea food sets, salads, national hot and cold hors d'oeuvres, soups, meat and sea food shish kebab, desserts and sauces. Interior of such restaurants adds to the national character of the dishes served. There are such food network restaurants that do not choose a national cuisine as their specialization, but rather focus on a food product that is always in high demand, e.g. chicken meat. In this case, menus of such restaurants will include a crispy chicken, savory breaded white meat and delicious chicken wings with chili pepper. But even in this case of so evident specialization, the restaurant would not do without ‘supplements’ for all tastes – Caesar salad, fried pies, stuffed pasties, dumplings, puffs, mushroom soup or milky corn skewers. With fast food eateries all meals are available to take away or order from home. Practically in all food network restaurants you can not only have a hearty and tasty meal but also organize a business meeting or a birthday party. Business lunches for office clerks or off-premise catering are a common feature of such restaurants.
