Animals Import

Wish to visit Moscow together with your cat? Have got used to travelling in the company of the favourite dog? Have decided to bring a parrot as a gift to Moscow friends? It is easy if you know key rules and order of animals import on the Russian territory from abroad.

Step one: the animal should have an international veterinary passport or the veterinary certificate (inquiry) of the international standart.

Step two: these documents are considered valid if they contain records confirmed by the signature of a doctor and a press of the clinic evidencing that the animal (the cat or the dog) is clinically healthy, and it is vaccinated from rabies, plagues carnivorous, hepatitis, enteritis virus, parvo — and adenoviral infections, leptospirosis — for dogs, and from rabies and panleikopeni — for cats. Thus vaccination should be made not earlier than before 30 days and not later than 12 months prior to departure date.

Step three: in the passport (or in the certificate) the mark must be present that the animal arrives on the Russian territory from the country with quiet epidemiological conditions.

You can cross the Russian border with a bird having the certificates that 30-day quarantine has been passed and the bird does not suffer from bird flu or a salmonellosis. Remember that rabbits and birds are not subject to inoculation before distant travel.

Now was comes to exotic animals. Trading with them and moving them through customs borders of the states is regulated by "The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES)" . And if leaving Colombia for Russia you decided to take a beautiful birdie with yourself as a live souvenir — pogonia from woodpecker family, CITES certificate and the permission of corresponding supervising body of Colombia will be required. If the animal or the bird is not included in the list of what is protected by the international convention, as, for example, a usual wavy parrot it will be enough to show the veterinary inquiry (the international veterinary certificate) for their import to Russia on border. For your information: almost all monkeys are included into CITES list.

If import to Russia of horned cattle, horses, poultry etc. is supposed, animals should pass a 21 days quarantine on specially equipped bases under supervision of the state veterinary service of the country-exporter before being imported. During this time state veterinarians conduct diagnostic laboratory researches and universal survey of animals. After crossing the border representatives of the Russian service of veterinary supervision will carefully check up the documents and it is possible that an additional quarantine will be appointed.

More detailed information on what animals, from what countries, in what quantity and on what conditions it is possible to import on the Russian territory can be found on the web-site of Federal Agency of veterinary and fytosanitory supervision of the Russian Federation.
